Seeing several clocks side by side answers a question that arithmetic does not: whether it is a reasonable hour to contact someone. Working out that Tokyo is nine hours ahead is easy; registering that this makes it 11pm there is what actually stops you sending a meeting request. Two things make manual calculation unreliable. Daylight saving does not move in step - the US and Europe change on different dates, the southern hemisphere shifts in the opposite direction, and large parts of Asia and Africa do not observe it at all - so a gap of "eight hours" is only true for part of the year. And some zones are offset by 30 or 45 minutes rather than whole hours: India is UTC+5:30, Nepal UTC+5:45, parts of Australia UTC+9:30.
