À propos de cet outil
GPA is a credit-weighted average, and the weighting is the part people miss when estimating it in their head. Each course contributes its grade points multiplied by its credit hours; you total those, then divide by total credits. A four-credit course therefore counts four times as heavily as a one-credit course, which means a poor grade in a major requirement damages your average far more than the same grade in a one-credit elective. Averaging the letter grades directly - adding them up and dividing by the number of courses - gives a different and wrong number. This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale where A is 4.0, B is 3.0, C is 2.0 and D is 1.0, with A+ available. Be aware that institutions vary: some award 4.3 for A+, some cap at 4.0, and weighted scales for honours and AP courses go to 5.0. Check your school's official scale before relying on any figure. Everything is calculated in your browser.
Comment utiliser cet outil
- Add each courseEnter the grade and the credit hours. Credit hours are what make the weighting work.
- Repeat for every course in the periodInclude everything that counts towards the GPA you are calculating.
- Read the weighted resultGrade points times credits, totalled and divided by total credits.
- Check against your school's scaleInstitutions differ on A+ handling and weighted courses. Confirm before relying on the figure.
Pourquoi l’utiliser
- Weights by credit hours correctly, which simple grade averaging does not.
- Shows the effect of each course, so you can see which grades are actually moving your average.
- Useful for planning - work out what you need next semester to reach a target.
- Runs in your browser; your grades are never transmitted.
- No account and no limit on the number of courses.
Usages courants
- Calculating your semester GPA before official results are published.
- Working out what grades you need to reach a target cumulative GPA.
- Checking eligibility for a scholarship, honours programme or graduate application.
- Estimating the impact of dropping or retaking a course.
- Converting a transcript to a 4.0 scale for an application abroad.
Conseils pour de meilleurs résultats
- Enter credit hours accurately. They drive the weighting entirely, and getting them wrong makes the result meaningless.
- For a cumulative GPA across semesters, include every course from all terms rather than averaging semester GPAs.
- Check how your institution treats A+ - some award 4.3, others cap at 4.0, and it changes the result.
- Weighted scales for AP and honours courses go above 4.0. Use your school's official mapping, not a generic one.
- To find what you need next term, calculate your current total grade points and work backwards from the target.
Erreurs à éviter
- Averaging semester GPAs to get a cumulative figure. That ignores differing credit loads and gives the wrong answer.
- Ignoring credit hours entirely and averaging letter grades, which is the most common estimation error.
- Assuming one universal scale. Institutions genuinely differ on A+ and weighted courses.
- Forgetting that failed and retaken courses may both count depending on the school's policy.
- Omitting pass/fail courses without checking whether they affect your GPA at your institution.
Questions fréquentes
A 4-credit course affects your GPA more than a 1-credit course, since GPA is a credit-weighted average - simply averaging letter grades without considering credit hours would give an inaccurate result.
Check the tool's specific grade-to-point mapping - most GPA calculators default to a standard 4.0 scale, though some schools use different scales (like 5.0 for weighted honors/AP courses).
Yes - enter every course from all terms together. Do not average your semester GPAs instead, because that ignores differing credit loads between terms and produces a different, incorrect figure.
Multiply your target GPA by your projected total credits to get the grade points you need overall, subtract the points you already have, and divide by next semester's credits. That gives the average grade point required.
It depends on the institution. Some award 4.3 for A+, others cap everything at 4.0. Check your school's official scale, since it changes the result and no calculator can know which policy applies to you.
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is transmitted or saved.
Yes. Gpa is free for normal use with no account required, and ToolBox does not add a watermark to your result.
Most tools in this category run in your browser so the file stays on your device. If a tool needs a temporary server job, files are handled for that job only and are not kept as a lasting archive.
