Tipping is arithmetic wrapped in social convention, and the convention is what actually confuses people - because it varies enormously by country. In the United States, tipping is effectively part of the wage: 15-20% is expected at a restaurant, and leaving nothing communicates dissatisfaction rather than thrift. In the UK, 10-12.5% is typical and a service charge is often already added to the bill, in which case tipping again is not expected. Across much of Europe rounding up is normal and 5-10% generous. In Japan tipping can cause genuine awkwardness and is best avoided entirely. The maths itself is simple; the useful part is doing it quickly and splitting fairly at the table. - Check for a service charge before tipping. In the UK and much of Europe it is often already on the bill, and tipping again is not expected.
- In the US, 18-20% is the current restaurant norm and 15% now reads as low. Tipping culture there shifted upward noticeably.
- Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is common practice in the US, but tipping on the total is also normal - enter whichever figure you intend to base it on.
