Every device on the internet has an IP address, and that address quietly says a fair amount: roughly where it is, which network owns it, and which company routes its traffic. This tool resolves any IPv4 or IPv6 address to its country, city and region, the ISP and organisation that own the block, the autonomous system (ASN) number, the local timezone, and the reverse DNS hostname if one is published. Leave the box empty and it looks up the address you are connecting from. Unlike most tools on this site, the lookup runs on our server rather than in your browser - geolocation providers cannot be called directly from a web page - so the address you submit is sent to us, used for the lookup and then discarded. There is a daily limit so the free service stays available to everyone.

  • The ASN is the most reliable field. City-level data is estimated, but the network owner is a matter of public registration record.
  • A reverse DNS name often gives away the host - names containing amazonaws, googleusercontent or ovh are a strong hint.
  • If the city looks wrong, that is normal. Many providers register whole blocks to a single head-office address.
  • Private addresses such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x have no public location by design, and the tool will say so.

Erreurs à éviter

  • Treating the coordinates as a device location. They identify a network, not a person or a house.
  • Assuming an IP identifies one individual. Mobile networks and shared connections put thousands of people behind a single address.
  • Blocking a whole country by IP and expecting it to hold - VPNs and proxies make that trivially avoidable.
  • Looking up a private address and reading "no location" as a failure. It is the correct answer.

An Autonomous System Number identifies the network that routes an address block, usually an ISP, hosting company or large organisation. It is the most dependable field here, because it comes from public routing registration rather than estimation.

Addresses like 192.168.1.1, 10.0.0.5 or 127.0.0.1 only exist inside a local network, so they are not routable on the public internet and have nothing to geolocate. That is correct behaviour, not an error.

No, and you should be wary of any tool that claims otherwise. An IP maps to a network, not a person or a building. Only the ISP holds subscriber details, and they release them only to a lawful request.
