Discounts look simpler than they are, and retailers know it. Two mistakes cost shoppers money regularly. The first is stacking percentages by adding them: 20% off followed by a further 10% off is not 30% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so £100 becomes £80 and then £72 - a 28% total reduction, not 30%. The second mistake runs the other way, in reverse calculations. If something is 25% off and costs £75, the original was not £75 plus 25%. That gives £93.75, which is wrong. The correct answer is £100, because the £25 saved was a quarter of the original, not a quarter of the sale price. This calculator handles three cases: finding the sale price from an original and a percentage, finding the discount percentage from an original and a final price, and working backwards to the original.
