Calculate 22K Gold Price per Gram and Tola (Live Rate)

World gold is quoted per troy ounce of 24K metal. Almost nobody buys that way. Jewellers in South Asia quote per gram or per tola, and most jewellery is 22K (91.6% gold), 21K or 18K, not pure 24K. If you compare a shop's 22K gram rate to the 24K headline on the news, the shop looks expensive even when it is close to spot. The missing step is purity.

22K is 22/24 = 0.9166 of the 24K price. A 10 gram 22K chain is not "10 grams times the 24K gram rate". It is 10 x 0.9166 times that rate, before making charges. The Gold Price Calculator does that conversion with live rates, 15 currencies, and grams, tola, troy ounces or kilograms.

Karat, hallmark and real weight

• 24K / 999 - bullion coins and bars. The headline rate.
• 22K / 916 - typical jewellery in Pakistan, India and the Gulf.
• 21K / 875 - common in some Gulf markets.
• 18K / 750 - fashion jewellery and many Western pieces.
• 14K / 585 - common in the US.

Weigh the piece in grams on a kitchen or jewellery scale. Stones, enamel and a steel clasp are not gold. Subtract them or you will overvalue the item. One tola here is 11.6638 g, the South Asian standard, not a round 12 g guess.

How to value a piece in three steps

1. Pick gold and your currency in the calculator. The live ounce rate is converted to gram and tola automatically.
2. Set the karat to match the hallmark. 916 means 22K. Using 24K on a 22K bangle overstates value by about 8%.
3. Enter the gold weight. Read the estimated melt value. A buyer will pay below that. A jeweller selling a new piece will add making charges on top.

Spot is not the shop window

• Dealers buy below spot. They have to hedge, assay and make a margin.
• New jewellery adds making charges, GST/VAT and sometimes a wastage percentage. Two shops can show the same "gold rate" and still quote different totals.
• Silver moves in larger percentage swings than gold. Recheck the rate on the day you trade.
• Metals use the troy ounce (31.1035 g), not the kitchen ounce (28.35 g).
