Internet Slow or Website Slow? Ping, Latency and Page Speed
Table of contents
People search "internet speed test" when Zoom stutters or a shop page crawls. Those are different failures. Your connection can be fine while a page ships 8 MB of images. A page can be light while your path to a game server is 200 ms with loss. ToolBox does not run an Ookla-style download/upload meter. It does measure latency to a host and how a real browser loads a URL. Use the one that matches the symptom.
If apps feel laggy: test ping first
The Ping Tool sends probes from ToolBox's network to a hostname you name. You get average / min / max latency, jitter and packet loss. That answers "is that server reachable and stable from the public internet?", not "how many megabits is my home fibre".
- High latency or loss to one host, fine to others: their server or a route, not your whole ISP plan.
- Everything timing out: DNS name wrong, or the host drops ICMP. Try another hostname.
- Need your laptop-to-router number? That has to be measured on your machine (OS ping, or your ISP's own test). A website cannot see inside your LAN.
A longer intro to the probe UI is in the Ping Tool guide.
If a specific website feels slow: test the page
The Website Speed Test loads the URL in a real headless browser and reports a grade, Core Web Vitals, page weight and ranked fixes. That is page experience, not your Wi-Fi bar. Heavy heroes, blocking scripts and layout shift show up here. Five tests per day, because each run is a real browser.

A simple decision
- Video calls and games stutter, every site included: check local Wi-Fi, then ping a few hosts. Reboot the router before you rebuild a webpage.
- Only one site is slow, especially on mobile: run the website speed test on that URL. Compress images, then re-test.
- Both look fine and the app is still bad: it may be the app's own region or a VPN. Ping their API hostname if you have it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I test download and upload Mbps here?
Not as a speed-tier meter. Use ping for latency/loss and the website test for page load. Your ISP or a dedicated bandwidth test measures Mbps from your house.
Why is ping different from my phone's speed test?
Different networks, different targets, different metrics. Ping is round-trip time. Mbps is throughput. A line can have high Mbps and still feel bad with jitter.
Is this free?
Yes. Ping is free. The website test is free with a daily cap.
Start with the Ping Tool or the Website Speed Test, depending on which sentence above sounded like your problem.
