À propos de cet outil

An .ico file is unusual among image formats: it is a container that holds several sizes of the same icon in one file. That design exists because the same favicon appears in wildly different contexts - 16 pixels in a browser tab, 32 in a bookmark bar, 48 in a Windows shortcut, larger again on a pinned tile. Letting the browser scale one large image down produces mushy results at 16px, where every pixel counts and fine detail turns to noise. Bundling purpose-made sizes lets each context pick the one drawn for it. The practical implication is about design, not tooling: an icon that works at 16 pixels cannot be your full logo. There is room for a letter, a simple mark or a bold shape, and nothing more. This tool starts from whatever you already have - upload a logo, or skip the design work entirely and generate an icon straight from a couple of letters or an emoji. Either way you get more than a bare favicon.ico: the download is a complete package with every PNG size a modern site actually references (Apple touch icon, Android/PWA sizes), a site.webmanifest, and the exact HTML snippet to paste into your <head> - plus a live preview of how the icon sits in a browser tab and on a phone home screen before you download anything. Generation runs entirely in your browser.

Comment utiliser cet outil

  1. Choose a sourceUpload a square logo image, or switch to Text (1-3 letters) or Emoji if you don't have artwork yet.
  2. Check the live previewSee exactly how the icon will look in a browser tab and on a phone home screen before generating anything.

  4. Download the full packageGet favicon.ico plus every standard PNG size, a site.webmanifest, and a ready-to-paste HTML snippet in one .zip.

Pourquoi l’utiliser

  • Works from an uploaded image, or generates an icon directly from text or an emoji when you have no logo yet.
  • Shows a live browser-tab and phone-home-screen preview before you commit to a download.
  • Bundles several sizes in one .ico, so each context uses an icon drawn for it rather than a scaled-down guess.
  • The full package download includes Apple touch icon, Android/PWA sizes, site.webmanifest and the HTML snippet - not just a bare .ico.
  • Runs in your browser - unreleased branding is never uploaded.
  • No account and no watermark.

Usages courants

  • Adding a favicon to a new website that has no logo yet - just type initials or pick an emoji.
  • Replacing a blurry favicon that was a scaled-down logo.
  • Getting the complete icon set (touch icon, PWA icons, manifest) for a new project in one download.
  • Producing a favicon from a logo supplied only as a raster image.
  • Refreshing a site's icon as part of a rebrand.

Conseils pour de meilleurs résultats

  • Simplify the design. A single letter, initials, or a bold emoji reads at 16 pixels; a detailed logo with text does not.
  • Use the browser-tab and home-screen preview to judge the icon at realistic size, not zoomed in - icons that look fine at 256px routinely fail at 16.
  • Download the full package, not just the .ico - modern browsers and phones look for the Apple touch icon and manifest icons by exact filename.
  • High contrast survives scaling. Thin lines and subtle gradients disappear at small sizes.
  • Set the site name field before downloading the package - it fills in site.webmanifest's name and short_name automatically.

Erreurs à éviter

  • Using a full detailed logo, which becomes unreadable at tab size.
  • Downloading only favicon.ico and skipping the Apple touch icon / manifest icons that modern devices actually request.
  • Starting from a small source image, leaving no detail to generate the larger sizes from.
  • Using a non-square image and getting an awkward crop.
  • Judging the result only at large preview size, where every icon looks fine.

Questions fréquentes

Yes - switch to the Text or Emoji tab. Text mode renders 1-3 letters on a colored background you choose; Emoji mode uses any emoji you paste in, with an optional background. Both work as a real source image for every download option, including the full package.

favicon.ico, favicon-16x16.png, favicon-32x32.png, apple-touch-icon.png (180x180), android-chrome-192x192.png, android-chrome-512x512.png, a site.webmanifest, and a text file with the matching HTML snippet - the complete set a real site references, not just the one .ico file.

Modern browsers and phones look for specific filenames beyond favicon.ico: apple-touch-icon.png for "Add to Home Screen" on iOS, and the sizes listed in site.webmanifest for Android and installable web apps. Shipping only favicon.ico means those surfaces fall back to a generic icon.

Start with a square image, ideally at least 256x256 pixels, so the generator has enough detail to produce sharp icons at all the smaller sizes bundled into the package.

Favicons are expected to be square - a non-square source image will typically be cropped or padded to fit a square canvas before generating the icon sizes.

Unzip the full package into your site root (the same folder as index.html), then paste the provided HTML snippet into your page's <head>. Browsers also request favicon.ico from the root automatically even without a link tag.

Almost always because the design is too detailed for 16 pixels, or the source image was too small. A favicon has room for a letter, initials or a simple mark - a full logo with text cannot survive that size, which is why recognisable brands use a simplified symbol.

No. The icon - whether from an uploaded image, typed text, or an emoji - is generated entirely in your browser, so unreleased branding stays on your device.

Yes. Favicon Generator is free for normal use with no account required, and ToolBox does not add a watermark to your result.
