Most barcode generators give you the same black rectangle. This one draws the barcode in the shape of a picture. Upload a bottle icon and you get a bottle made of bars; upload your logo and the logo is the barcode. Nothing is added around it and nothing decorative is layered on top - the silhouette of your image is the whole design. The reason that works comes down to how a scanner reads. A laser or camera reads one horizontal line at a time, and that line only decodes if every bar is present along it. Clipping a barcode to a shape can only remove ink, so a row stays readable as long as the shape still covers all of its bars. The studio uses that: it measures the widest unbroken horizontal run in your image and fits the code to exactly that width. On a pineapple that run is the body, which is why barcode art of this kind is always drawn body-width rather than stretched across the leaves. Every render is then measured rather than assumed. The page counts how many rows carry the complete code and tells you plainly whether the result is scannable, too tight to rely on, or will not read at all. That matters more than it sounds: a partially clipped barcode does not simply fail, it can be read as a different valid code, which is worse than one that fails outright. - Bold silhouettes with a wide, solid middle work best. The widest unbroken row sets the barcode width, so a shape with a chunky body gives a bigger, more readable code.
- Code 128 is the most forgiving format to shape because it is denser and adapts to the text length. The retail formats have a fixed module count and less room to give.
- Transparent PNGs give the cleanest outlines, because the alpha channel is read as the shape rather than guessing from brightness.
- Keep the bars darker than the background. Scanners read contrast, and an inverted code is rejected by a lot of retail hardware.
- Print larger than a plain barcode and keep the pale margin around it. That margin is part of the symbol.
- If the badge says Too tight, try a chunkier shape or switch to Code 128 before reaching for the solid band.
