Counting words sounds trivial until you need the number to match someone else's. A word count is only as useful as the rule behind it, and different systems count differently: whether a hyphenated compound is one word or two, whether numbers count, whether headings and captions are included. Microsoft Word, Google Docs and most online counters agree on ordinary prose but diverge on edge cases, which is why a 2,000-word essay can read as 1,987 somewhere else. This tool splits on whitespace, which is the same convention Word uses and the one nearly every academic and publishing requirement assumes. Character counts matter for a different reason - social platforms, meta descriptions and SMS all impose hard limits, and they usually count characters including spaces. Both counts are shown, live as you type, along with sentence and paragraph totals. Nothing is uploaded; the text stays in your browser.

- Check which count your requirement means. "2,000 words" and "12,000 characters" are very different targets.
- Ask whether references, footnotes and appendices are included before trusting a total against an academic limit.
- For meta descriptions, aim for 150-160 characters - Google truncates by pixel width, so treat that as guidance rather than a hard rule.
- Paste as plain text when checking against a strict limit; formatting sometimes carries hidden characters.

Erros a evitar
- Assuming every counter agrees. Hyphenated words, numbers and symbols are treated differently by different tools, so verify against whatever the marker actually uses.
- Counting the whole document when the limit applies only to the body text.
- Writing to the maximum. Most limits are ceilings, not targets, and padding is obvious to a reader.
- Confusing characters with spaces and without - the difference on a long post is substantial.
- Relying on a word count as a quality measure. Length says nothing about whether the writing is any good.
