How to read an emoji puzzle
Emoji puzzles are rebuses, and rebuses follow rules. Once you know the small set of tricks a puzzle setter has available, most rounds stop being guesswork.
Decide whether each emoji is a sound or a meaning
This is the fork every puzzle turns on. An emoji is either standing in for a concept, or for the sound of its name. A bee is either an insect or the letter B. An eye is either vision or the word "I". If the concept reading produces nonsense, re-read the whole line phonetically before assuming you have the wrong emoji.
Count the emojis against the answer's shape
Where the puzzle tells you how many words the answer has, map emojis to words first. Four emojis and a two-word answer usually means two emojis combine per word - often one for each syllable. This alone eliminates most wrong guesses.
Read the order literally
Rebuses are almost always left to right in answer order. If you have confidently decoded the third emoji, you know roughly where that sound or idea sits in the answer, which constrains everything around it. Repeated emojis usually mean a plural or a doubled letter.
Use the category as a filter, not a hint
When a round tells you it is a film or a country, use it to reject readings rather than to generate them. Decode first, then check the candidate against the category. Guessing famous titles that merely feel related to the emojis is the slowest possible approach and is where most rounds are lost.
