Keyboard shortcuts & mouse controls

Right-click is switched off on this site, so the browser menu can never end up on top of a tool. Everything that menu would have done is still one keystroke away - and this page is the whole list. Filter it if you already know what you want to do.

Why right-click is off

A browser menu over a tool page offers "Save image as", "Inspect" and "View page source" for whatever you happened to click - which is easy to trigger by accident while working in a canvas, a crop box or a template preview. It is suppressed here instead, on purpose.

Typing fields are the exception: click into any search box, invoice line or text area and the normal menu comes back, because that is where the spell-check and paste entries live. Nothing is blocked inside them.

On this website

The only two the site adds itself - everything else below is your browser.

  • CtrlK Open the search palette from any page ⌘ K on a Mac
  • Esc Close the search palette, a language menu or an open dialog
  • ↓ Move down the search results
  • ↑ Move back up the search results
  • Enter Open the highlighted result, or activate the focused card
  • Space Activate a focused card or drop area - same as Enter
  • Tab Move to the next control on the page
  • ShiftTab Move to the previous control

Right-click is off - use these instead

The browser menu is suppressed so it can never sit on top of a tool or offer "Inspect". These are the same jobs, from the keyboard.

  • Ctrlclick Open a link or card in a new tab ⌘ + click
  • CtrlShiftclick Open it in a new tab, left in the background ⌘ + Shift + click
  • middle-click Same as above - the middle button still opens a new tab
  • Shiftclick Open it in a new window instead
  • Altclick Save the target straight to your Downloads folder Option + click
  • Tab Reach a link you want the address of (see the next row)
  • CtrlC With the link focused, copies its address to the clipboard
  • CtrlShiftC Pick an element to inspect, then click it ⌘ + Shift + C
  • F12 Open the developer tools Option + ⌘ + I
  • CtrlU View the page source Option + ⌘ + U
  • CtrlShiftR Reload ignoring the cache ⌘ + Shift + R

Typing in a tool

Every field on the site is a real input, so the normal editing keys all work.

Files, without a right-click

Getting a file in and out of a tool, using only the keyboard or a drag.

  • Tab Focus a drop area, then press Enter or Space to open the file picker
  • Enter Opens the picker - or use Space, which does the same
  • drop Drag a file from your desktop straight onto the drop area
  • CtrlV Paste an image or some text into a tool that accepts it
  • click Every tool has its own Download button - no menu needed
  • CtrlS Save a result you opened in its own tab ⌘ + S
  • share On iPhone and iPad the download buttons open the iOS share sheet

In the Chrome extension

The popup has one shortcut of its own, and it works on any site - not just this one.

  • CtrlShiftK Open the 500Toolbox popup from any page Command + Shift + K
  • Enter Run the highlighted tool inside the popup
  • Esc Close the popup

On a Mac

Use ⌘ where this page says Ctrl for the search palette, for clicking through into a new tab, and for copy, paste, undo and the tab keys. Word-wise cursor moves and word deletes use Option instead of Ctrl. Rows that differ show their own Mac keys underneath.
