About this tool

Memorize a code before it disappears from view, then recall it correctly - with levels that get progressively longer and harder, this is a genuine test and trainer for short-term memory capacity.

How to use this tool

  1. Start memory levelView short code for limited display time.
  2. Encode pattern mentallyUse chunking or rhythm to memorize sequence.
  3. Enter recalled codeType exact value after hidden phase begins.
  4. Progress to harder stringsAdvance with longer and more complex codes.

How to play the password memory game

A code of letters and numbers appears for a few seconds and then disappears. Type it back exactly. Get it right and the next code is longer. Easy, medium and hard change how long the codes are and how much time you get to look at them.

Break the code into chunks of three or four characters - the way phone numbers are grouped - and say them in your head. Most people can hold about seven items in short-term memory, and chunking is how you go beyond that. Practise with game codes only; never type a real password into a game.

Key features

  • Strengthens short-term recall under pressure.
  • Progressive levels provide clear challenge scaling.
  • Great cognitive training mini-game.
  • Fast rounds support repeated practice.

Common uses

  • Daily memory training exercises.
  • Classroom cognitive warmups.
  • Friendly recall competitions.
  • Attention and focus development practice.

Tips for better results

  • Group digits/characters into small chunks.
  • Use visual or rhythm anchors for recall.
  • Prioritize accuracy before speed.
  • Practice consistent level before moving up.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to memorize full string in one pass.
  • Typing too fast and creating avoidable errors.
  • Skipping pattern strategies entirely.
  • Jumping difficulty too quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Typically the code/sequence gets longer as you advance through levels, requiring you to memorize progressively more characters or digits before recall.

Check the specific game's timing - the display duration is usually calibrated to be a genuine but fair challenge relative to the code's length at that level.

Typically the game ends or you lose a life/attempt, with your reached level or score recorded as your result for that playthrough.

Chunking: group the characters into blocks of three or four, as with phone numbers. Most people hold about four chunks comfortably, far more than single characters.

Use a password manager for real accounts, and memorise just one strong passphrase for it. A passphrase of several random words is both strong and much easier to remember than a random code.

Short-term memory usually holds around seven items, give or take two, and many researchers today put it closer to four chunks. Grouping is what lets you go beyond that.
