About this tool

Image compression reduces a photo's file size by changing how it is encoded, while keeping the pixel dimensions the same and, as far as possible, the visible quality too. It is worth separating the two things people often confuse: resizing changes how many pixels an image has, while compressing changes how efficiently those pixels are stored. A 4000-pixel-wide photo compressed heavily is still 4000 pixels wide. Modern phone cameras are the usual reason people end up here - they produce files of several megabytes each, which are too large to email, slow to load on a web page, and quick to fill up storage. Because photographs contain enormous amounts of detail the eye cannot track precisely, they can usually be reduced by around 88% before any difference becomes visible. Tips for better results

  • Compare at 100% zoom, not fit-to-screen. Compression artefacts are invisible when the image is scaled down on screen.
  • If the image is far larger than it will ever be displayed, resize it first - that saves more than compression alone and costs no quality.
  • Photographs compress well; screenshots, logos and text-heavy graphics do not. Those are better kept as PNG.
  • Keep your originals. Compression is one-way, and you may need the full-quality file later for print or re-editing.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Compressing an already-compressed image repeatedly. Each pass adds new artefacts on top of the old ones, permanently.
  • Expecting the image to look smaller on screen. Compression changes file size, not dimensions - use the Image Resizer for that.
  • Pushing quality to the minimum. Blocking and colour banding appear long before the file gets meaningfully smaller.
  • Compressing images destined for print. Print needs the full-quality original; heavy compression shows up clearly on paper.
  • Compressing logos and screenshots as JPG. Sharp edges and text develop halos - keep those lossless.
