About this tool
A QR code is normally a grid of black and white squares with no room for anything else. This tool makes the picture itself into the code. Each square of the code is divided into a three by three block, and only the very centre of that block is locked to the value the code needs. The eight subsquares around it are free to follow your image, so a photo, logo or icon shows through the pattern while the data underneath stays intact. That works because of how scanners actually read a QR code. A scanner finds the symbol using the three large corner squares, rebuilds the grid, and then samples a small area at the middle of each cell. It never looks at the rest of the cell. Pinning those centres and giving away everything else is what lets the picture appear without the payload changing at all. Everything runs in your browser. The image you upload is read on your device and never uploaded, and the code is generated at the highest error correction level so there is as much margin as possible for print, poor light and cheap phone cameras. Tips for better results
- Simple silhouettes beat detailed photographs. Each module is one dot of the picture, so anything smaller than that disappears.
- Keep the ink darker than the background. Scanners work from contrast rather than colour, and although some apps now cope with a light-on-dark code, support for that is inconsistent enough that it is not worth the risk in print.
- Short links make smaller, more forgiving codes. A long URL forces a denser grid, which leaves less room for the picture.
- Print larger than a plain QR code. These have less margin by design, so size is the cheapest way to buy it back.
- Test with more than one phone. Camera quality and scanning apps vary more than people expect.
- For fabric or curved surfaces, drop the picture strength and increase the size.
Mistakes to avoid
- Turning off pattern protection to make it prettier. Those patterns are how a scanner locates the code, and without them most phones will not read it.
- Pushing the strength to maximum on a busy photograph, which leaves little margin once print and lighting are added.
- Using a light image on a dark background without inverting, which produces a code with reversed polarity.
- Printing without testing. A code that scans on screen can still fail on paper at a smaller size.
- Encoding a very long URL and then wondering why the picture is unrecognisable - the denser the grid, the smaller each dot of the image.
