About this tool

Calculates the exact difference between two times or full datetimes - useful for figuring out exactly how many hours and minutes apart two events are, whether within the same day or spanning different days entirely.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter start and end valuesProvide two times or full datetimes for accurate span calculation.
  2. Run difference calculationCompute elapsed duration in hours, minutes, and optional seconds.
  3. Check cross-day spansVerify midnight and multi-day intervals are interpreted correctly.
  4. Use output in planningApply result to scheduling, billing, or reporting tasks.

Calculate the time difference between two times

Enter a start and an end time and the calculator returns the difference in hours, minutes and seconds. In Time Only mode, an end time earlier than the start is treated as the next day, so a 22:00 to 06:00 night shift is 8 hours. Switch to Date + Time when the gap spans several days.

A worked example: a team starts warming up at 8:20 a.m. and the game ends at 11:15 a.m. From 8:20 to 11:20 would be exactly 3 hours; the end is 5 minutes earlier, so the total is 2 hours 55 minutes.

Key features

  • Removes manual arithmetic errors in elapsed-time calculations.
  • Handles same-day and cross-day scenarios cleanly.
  • Useful for operational, payroll, and planning workflows.
  • Fast conversion for practical day-to-day timing questions.

Common uses

  • Calculating shift and overtime durations.
  • Measuring turnaround time between incidents.
  • Checking gap between flights or appointments.
  • Estimating time spent across task boundaries.

Tips for better results

  • Use full datetime input when period crosses date boundaries.
  • Normalize timezone before comparing remote timestamps.
  • Round consistently when converting minutes to billable units.
  • Recheck AM/PM entry for 12-hour format inputs.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using same-day time fields for multi-day intervals.
  • Ignoring timezone context in distributed team calculations.
  • Mixing 12-hour and 24-hour assumptions.
  • Treating planned duration as actual elapsed value.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. In Time Only mode an end time earlier than the start is counted as the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 is an 8-hour overnight shift. If the two points are more than a day apart, switch to Date + Time and enter full dates, and the full elapsed duration is calculated.

Typically hours and minutes (and sometimes seconds), giving a precise breakdown of the exact time span between your two inputs.

If both times are simply local values without timezone context, the calculation is a straightforward difference - for cross-timezone calculations, use the dedicated Timezone Difference tool instead.

Enter the start and end time; if the shift crosses midnight, include the dates. Subtract unpaid breaks from the result to get the hours to bill or record on a timesheet.

Divide the minutes by 60: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, 20 minutes is 0.33 hours. Payroll and invoicing systems usually expect decimal hours.

On the night daylight saving starts or ends, a day is 23 or 25 hours long. A difference that spans that night includes the missing or extra hour, which is correct but easy to forget.
