Each block of pixels is measured for brightness and swapped for a character of matching visual weight - dense characters like @ for dark areas, spaces for light ones. Because it runs on your device, the image is never uploaded anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Monospace characters are roughly twice as tall as they are wide, so the tool halves the number of rows to compensate. If you paste the output somewhere that uses a different font, the proportions can shift - always view ASCII art in a monospace font like Consolas, Menlo or Courier.
'Standard' works for most photos. 'Detailed' uses 69 characters and captures far more tonal detail but needs a wider output to read properly. 'Blocks' uses solid block characters and gives the cleanest result at small sizes. 'Binary' is a stylistic choice rather than a detailed one.
The tool automatically stretches brightness to use the full character range, but a very flat or backlit photo can still struggle. Increase Contrast to separate the tones, and use Brightness to shift the overall level. High-contrast photos with a clear subject always convert best.
Yes - tick 'Invert'. Without it the art is designed for dark text on a light background, so pasting it onto a dark theme reverses the image and makes the subject unreadable.
