Convert HEIC to JPG on Mac and Android (Free, No App Store)

iPhones save HEIC to save space. Macs usually open HEIC in Preview and Photos. Android, Windows PCs without a codec, older Mac tools and a long list of websites do not. The file looks fine in your Camera Roll and then fails as an email attachment, a WhatsApp document or a job-portal upload that "only accepts JPG/PNG".

This is not a Windows-only problem. Android users get AirDropped or Drive-shared HEICs they cannot thumbnail. Mac users hit apps that still expect JPG, including many browsers when a site checks the file extension. The Windows walkthrough covers PCs. This one is Mac, Android and "any browser tab".

Convert without installing a converter app

1. Get the HEIC files onto the computer or phone you are using. On Mac, AirDrop or a USB export from Photos works. On Android, download them from Drive, WhatsApp or email.
2. Open HEIC to JPG in the browser. Add one photo or a whole album.
3. Convert and download the JPGs. Keep the HEICs on the iPhone. They are smaller; the JPG is the sharing copy.
4. If the JPGs are then too large to email, run them through the Image Compressor.

Conversion usually stays in your browser. If a rare HEIC variant cannot decode locally, that file is sent to the server just to finish the job, then discarded.

Stop creating HEICs you cannot share

On the iPhone: Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible. New photos save as JPG. That uses more storage on the phone and saves the conversion step for everything you send to Android friends and web forms.

On a Mac, Preview can export a single HEIC to JPEG (File, Export). It does not help when you have forty photos, or when you are on someone else's Android. The browser tool does.

What you lose in JPG

• Live Photo motion. JPG is a still. Export the video component from Photos if you need it.
• A little efficiency. The JPG is often about twice the HEIC. That is the compatibility tax.
• Depth / portrait extras that some Apple apps keep beside the image.
