- A generic invoice is fine until you have two clients with the same name. Add a short client code to the invoice number and that problem disappears permanently.
- Put the due date on it, not just the issue date. "Net 30" is ambiguous to a client who has never seen it.
- Include your payment details on the invoice itself. An invoice that makes someone ask how to pay gets paid late.
- Number your invoices in one unbroken sequence. Gaps are the first thing an accountant asks about.
Mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting tax where it applies - add your registration number as well as the rate.
- Burying the total, when no breakdown is given somewhere the client has to hunt for it. That is what turns a payment into a conversation.
